BUILDING UNDER THE TREES

The brief was to extend a Doctor’s Surgery by adding two extra Trainee Consulting Suites.

The problem was that this meant building under the canopies of mature protected trees. The solution that satisfied the Local Planning Authority was to raise the stone single storey extension on a steel framework sat on piled foundations, in order to minimise damage to the tree roots.

Instead of conventional rainwater gutters that would have clogged with leaves in autumn and required digging through the roots for additional drainage, we used the 'Rainhandler' System. This disperses the water running off the roof as a spray, and leaves just blow off it. The Drainage Authority were happy to accept this as a sustainable solution.
